The Nigerian government is set to launch a “contactless” passport renewal process in April 2025, allowing citizens to complete the renewal from their homes.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced this new system, designed to reduce physical visits to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) offices, except for biometric capture.
The process, available only to those renewing their passports, will involve downloading the NIS app, filling out personal details, and submitting fingerprints and photographs digitally.
Once verified, users can complete the renewal by making an online payment.
This initiative follows several delayed launches, with previous dates set in 2023 and early 2024. Despite setbacks, the minister assured that testing is ongoing and the system is now 99% ready.

The fully automated process aims to minimize human contact and streamline passport services, benefiting Nigerians both at home and abroad.
