Somalia has declared that Ethiopia will not participate in the new African Union peacekeeping mission set to start January 1, 2025.
Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur stated on Saturday that Ethiopia‘s involvement with Somaliland, which Somalia views as a breakaway region, violates Somali sovereignty.
Ethiopia’s refusal to withdraw from a controversial Memorandum of Understanding with Somaliland has led Somalia to bar Ethiopian forces from joining the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), the successor to ATMIS.
The AUSSOM mission, expected to field at least 12,000 troops, aims to continue combatting al-Shabab and to transition security responsibilities to Somali forces by 2028.

Somalia is currently strengthening military ties with other nations, including Egypt, which has offered troops for the new mission.
