The United Kingdom has experienced a 35% drop in visa applications over the past year following the introduction of stricter immigration policies aimed at reducing the number of foreign nationals entering the country.
Visa applications decreased from 141,000 to 91,000 after the new rules took effect in January 2024.
These changes primarily target international students, limiting their ability to bring dependants unless they are enrolled in postgraduate research courses or government-funded scholarship programs.
This policy is part of a broader government effort to curb immigration, which reached a record high of 1.22 million last year.
The education sector has felt the impact, with study visa applications declining by 16% between January and July 2024.
There was also a significant 81% decrease in visa applications from the dependants of students.
The healthcare sector has been severely affected as well, with an 80% reduction in Health and Care Worker visa applications. Nadra Ahmed, Executive Co-chairman of the National Care Association, voiced concerns that many healthcare workers are now moving to countries with more relaxed immigration policies.

Despite these challenges, the UK government remains committed to controlling immigration and building a “homegrown workforce” to address the nation’s skilled labor shortage.
