As of August 11, 2024, Canada’s minimum wage remains set at $16.50 per hour for the year, with employers required to comply with this rate according to national guidelines.
However, several provinces have already implemented or are preparing for significant wage increases later this year, some of which are tied to inflation.
In Prince Edward Island, the minimum wage increased to $15.40 on April 1, 2024, and is scheduled to rise further to $16.00 on October 1, 2024. Saskatchewan is set to raise its minimum wage to $15.00 per hour on October 1, 2024.
Nova Scotia increased its minimum wage on September 1, 2024, and expanded workers’ compensation coverage to include those affected by chronic workplace stress.
Nunavut introduced Canada’s highest minimum wage on January 1, 2024, raising it from $16.00 to $19.00 per hour. Yukon currently holds the highest provincial minimum wage at $16.77 per hour, leading the country in wage rates.
In addition, Ontario will implement its annual minimum wage adjustment on October 1, 2024, with the current rate at $16.55 per hour.
