As an African, when I visit other African countries, the excitement of the people and their warm reception make me feel at home. I have also witnessed cases where whites (westerners and non Africans) come to Africa, and Africans treat them with great respect and hospitality. It is the African nature. Aside from this attribute, Africa offers unending and exhilarating adventures that you can never imagine. But you may not know this if you don’t explore.
In this blog post, I’ll be revealing the five best spots in Africa for independent solo travellers. Let’s get into it. (Male, female, old or young)
Senegal – The Soulful Heart of West Africa
Senegal is a rarely chosen destination on most travellers’ lists. However, it’s a destination that promises adventurous experiences for solo travellers.
A traveller on Reddit shared their plans to go on a Senegal solo trip. They once visited when they were 15, now 21 years old and want to travel alone. Commenters in the chat spoke about how Senegal is safe; however, there are just some safety precautions as one would take anywhere else.
Cou, (who also writes on Reddit) commented, and I shared their experience during their visit to Senegal last year. They travelled to Dakar alone and highly recommended it for anyone considering Senegal and wanting to travel solo.

- Visit one of the primary fishing markets in Senegal, Mbour.
- Travel along the Pont Faidherbe bridge to Saint Louis Island and enjoy the scenic view of the flowing waters.
- Visit Djoudj Bird National Park and see thousands of birds of diverse varieties.
- Enjoy local music and street food in Saint-Louis.
Mochievous, a travel Influencer on X, while sharing some tips on a month’s travel to Senegal for digital nomads. She shared that she felt safe when she travelled to Senegal as a solo traveller.

Ethiopia – A Tapestry of Ancient Wonders
Solo travel Ethiopia offers a gratifying experience. Ethiopia is a place of historic sites in Africa. As a solo traveller who delights in history and mountain adventures, this is the best place you can be. Prepare to take lots of pictures at scenic peaks.

But on a serious note though, if you want to take a solo trip, a few countries in Africa to consider are: Morocco, Gambia, Rwanda, Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire, Bénin Republic, Uganda and Tanzania.

- Join community tours or hostel meet-ups.
Final Thoughts
Africa is a mosaic of cultures and experiences. It offers a chance to connect with history and humanity wherever you go. Independently traveling to any of these five destinations is proof that even the off-beaten path leads to the most memorable adventures.
Don’t forget to embrace the hospitality of the locals. It might be an opportunity for you to turn strangers into friends who will forever be valuable to you.
