The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration in the United States expanded its learner’s permit tests and study manuals in September by adding Yoruba, alongside nine other languages.
These additions included Tagalog, Amharic, Arabic, Russian, Urdu, Hindi, Farsi, Portuguese, and American Sign Language.
Previously, the tests were only available in English, Spanish, French, Korean, traditional Chinese, and Vietnamese. The initiative aimed to improve accessibility for Maryland’s multilingual population, as identified in U.S. census data.
Chrissy Nizer, an administrator with the Motor Vehicle Agency, highlighted the importance of inclusivity, stating, “Improving accessibility for the driver’s knowledge test and study materials was critical to serve Maryland’s linguistically diverse population.”
