The United States hosted over 1.1 million international students in the 2023/24 academic year, a 7% increase from the previous year, according to the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) Open Doors report.
India surpassed China as the top sending country, with 331,602 Indian students, a 35% rise. China, while second overall, saw a 4% decline but remained the top source for undergraduate and non-degree students.
Sub-Saharan Africa recorded the highest growth rate, with enrolments rising by 13%, led by Nigeria and Ghana. Meanwhile, eight countries, including Nepal, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, reached all-time highs.

International students contributed $50 billion to the US economy, with 56% pursuing STEM fields. Despite the growth, international students account for just 6% of US higher education enrolment, compared to 26% in the UK and 40% in Canada.
