If you don’t know the law, your rights can be trampled upon. There are travel laws in Nigeria that protect your rights as a traveller. But what exactly are you entitled to when you experience unpleasant treatment by airline operators?
In this blog post, I’ll share what the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) travel law says. You’ll have essential knowledge that can save you time and money on your next trip.
Understanding Nigerian Aviation Laws
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is the body responsible for protecting airline passengers in Nigeria.
Below are some of their responsibilities.
- Ensures airports function properly.
- Manages aviation safety.
- Provides economic and regulatory services.
- Protects airline passengers’ rights.
- Ensures airlines duly fulfill their obligations to passengers.

In cases of flight cancellations, overbooking, and delays, I’ll be sharing what you’re entitled to from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority regulations, for both domestic and international flights.
Domestic Flights
- If a domestic flight is delayed beyond its scheduled departure time, the airline must inform passengers of the reason within 30 minutes of the scheduled departure. A delay of two hours entitles you to refreshments and a meal.
- If the delay extends beyond three hours, you are entitled to a full refund or re-routing on the next available flight.
- If the delay extends beyond 10 PM until 4 AM, when the airport is closed, you are entitled to refreshments, accommodation, and transportation to your hotel.
- If your flight is delayed for more than six hours after the previously announced departure time, you are entitled to extra compensation – 25% of the ticket price for domestic flights.
International Flights
- If an international flight is delayed for 2 to 4 hours, the airline must provide compensation of 30% of the ticket price.
- If the delay exceeds four hours, you are entitled to refreshments and communication access, such as telephone calls, SMS, and emails.
- If the delay extends beyond six hours, you are entitled to hotel accommodation and transportation to and from the hotel.

Flight Cancellations: Refunds & Compensation
If you’ve ever experienced a flight cancellation, you know how frustrating it can be. But don’t panic, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) Law protects you if you know your rights. I’ll share what your right entails.
Domestic Flights
If your domestic flight is cancelled less than 24 hours before departure, you are entitled to the following:
- A compensation of 25% of your ticket price
- A refund or re-routing to your destination at no extra cost
- An immediate reimbursement if you paid in cash or within 14 days if paid electronically
International Flights
Your rights depend on when you were notified about the international flight cancellation. I’ll be sharing notification periods and what it attracts below.
- At least 7 days before departure: No compensation, but you can request a refund or rebooking.
- 3 to 7 days before departure: You are entitled to re-routing if the new flight departs no more than 2 hours earlier than your original departure. If you reach your final destination less than 4 hours after your original arrival time.
- Less than 3 days before departure: You are entitled to re-routing if the new flight departs no more than 1 hour earlier than your original departure. If you reach your final destination less than 2 hours after your original arrival time. A compensation of 30% of your ticket price.
In the event of cancellation, an aviation industry influencer emphasized that if a flight is canceled due to bad weather, passengers should remain calm and understand the situation. Meanwhile, a commenter noted that proper communication from the airline is key in such cases.

Denied Boarding & Overbooking: What to Do?
Airlines sometimes overbook flights, a common practice where they sell more tickets than available seats, assuming some passengers won’t show up. However, when all passengers arrive, some may be denied boarding. If this happens to you, the rights below will help.
- Airlines must first ask for volunteers willing to give up their seats. They are also required to provide compensation and assistance to affected passengers.
- If you voluntarily give up your seat, you are entitled to 25% compensation of your ticket price for domestic flights and 30% compensation of your ticket price for international flights.

- Passengers on urgent medical trips.
- Passengers who checked in early.
- Frequent flyers and passengers with high-fare tickets.
- Families with young children (under 5 years old).
Final Thoughts
Requesting compensation and standing on your rights might not come easily, but I assure you, insisting on proper compensation will get you what you are entitled to. Some airlines might want to issue you travel certificates instead of a refund; insist on adequate compensation. It is also important that you keep all boarding passes and receipts because they serve as proof when you are making claims. If the airline refuses to comply, file a formal complaint with the NCAA online.
