Nigeria crossed a historic threshold in sustainable aviation when the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) officially launched the country’s first fully electric airport-to-city shuttle bus service at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, deploying locally manufactured electric vehicles in a three-way partnership that positions Nigeria’s aviation sector at the frontier of green mobility on the African continent.

The initiative, executed in collaboration with NEV Electric, Nigeria’s foremost electric vehicle manufacturer, and Possible Electric Mobility, the country’s largest electric vehicle fleet operator, marks a defining moment in FAAN’s sustainability roadmap and a watershed for Nigerian aviation infrastructure.

Shuttle Deployment

The initial deployment covers 30 electric vehicles: ten NEV T6 electric shuttle buses and 20 electric saloon cars, designed to serve both airside and landside logistics, staff movement, and passenger coordination.

The service transports passengers between the airport and major city terminals including hotels, business districts, and key government offices with shuttles running daily from 7am to 7pm at a fare of ₦10,000 per passenger from the airport to Abuja’s city centre.

Abimbola Gyer, Head of Fleet Operations at Possible EVS, explained the rollout model:

“We have partnered with NEV Electric, the manufacturer of the electric buses, and then we’ll begin operations moving passengers from the airport to the city centre, one stop, one location. And as demand continues, we will expand our hub.”

Cleaner Air, Quieter Terminals

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, FAAN Managing Director Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku made clear that the programme extended beyond logistics.

“Improving connectivity to the airport is a critical pillar of our surface access strategy. “The introduction of the Nigerian-made NEV T6 electric bus fleet represents a major step in our efforts to make travel to and from our airports cleaner, quieter, and more efficient.”

Kuku situated the launch within FAAN’s broader vision of a fully green airport network:

“We intend to scale this model. In the near future, we envision clean-energy solutions across all our airports. from electric vehicles to solar power infrastructure, positioning FAAN as a leader in eco-friendly aviation management in Africa.”

She confirmed that approval had already been secured to deploy 100 electric vehicles as airport shuttles at both Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, describing it as “a monumental step towards greening our operations and reducing our carbon footprint.”

Readiness

FAAN Board Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje anchored the launch within Nigeria’s global aviation obligations.

“These vehicles will support airside and landside logistics, staff movement and services, strengthening passenger coordination and efficiency across the airport,” he said.

On the environmental imperative, Ganduje was direct:

“Electric vehicles offer clear operational and environmental benefits. They are cleaner, quieter and more energy-efficient, significantly reducing carbon emissions and helping FAAN minimise its ecological footprint. This initiative directly supports global sustainability targets, including ICAO’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. By embracing electric mobility, FAAN is positioning Nigerian airports to remain competitive, responsible and future-ready.”
