In a historic ceremony on November 19, 2024, Ghana granted citizenship to 524 members of the African diaspora, including Black Americans, during a ceremony at the Accra International Conference Centre.
This marks the third such event under President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, strengthening Ghana’s ties with its global African family.
The initiative builds on the 2019 *Year of Return*, which commemorated 400 years since enslaved Africans were taken to the Americas.
President Akufo-Addo described the occasion as a step toward healing and unity, declaring, “Africa is your home, and Ghana welcomes you with open arms.”

He encouraged the new citizens to embrace Ghanaian values of respect, equity, and peace while contributing their skills to national development. The government reiterated its commitment to fostering diaspora connections and promoting African unity.
