Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a major shift in immigration policy, citing exploitation by “fake colleges” and corporations.
In a recent address, Trudeau acknowledged past mistakes and promised reforms to balance population growth with housing and economic needs.
Under the new plan, Canada will reduce permanent resident admissions to 395,000 by 2025, a 20% drop from 2024, and cut temporary immigrant numbers from 800,000 to 446,000 annually by 2026. Priority will shift to permanent residents with healthcare and construction skills.
The government also ended the fast-track SDS visa program, affecting international students, particularly from India.

Trudeau’s announcement comes amid mounting criticism over housing shortages, inflation, and infrastructure strain. He stressed the need to prevent exploitation and stabilise growth to meet community demands.
