As of November 8, 2024, international students in Canada can now work up to 24 hours per week during academic terms, an increase from the previous 20-hour limit.
This policy aims to offer students greater flexibility to gain work experience and financial independence while studying.
Eligibility for off-campus work requires full-time enrollment at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in a program lasting at least six months, leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate. Students must hold a valid study permit and apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN).
The new rules also allow full-time work during scheduled breaks and after graduation while awaiting Post-Graduation Work Permit approval. However, non-compliance with work limits could lead to loss of student status and other immigration consequences.
