The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is addressing key operational challenges to enhance airport efficiency, according to Captain Abdullahi Mahmood, Director of Airport Operations.
Mahmood highlighted the successful reopening of Runway 18 at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, which had been closed for eight months due to contractual issues.Â
He also confirmed that Hajj operations resumed at Ilorin Airport after resolving runway lighting issues.
FAAN is now focusing on upgrading facilities, including remodeling outdated airport toilets and addressing maintenance needs at airports nationwide.Â
In addition, FAAN is conducting regular runway friction tests and derubberization to ensure safety standards are met.

To reduce pressure on major airports, FAAN plans to incentivize airlines to use underutilized airports. Additionally, efforts are underway to remove abandoned aircraft cluttering airport spaces.
