President Bola Tinubu has approved a National Policy on Health Workforce Migration to address the increasing exodus of Nigerian healthcare professionals. Announced by Health Minister Muhammad Pate, this 56-page policy aims to manage health workers’ migration without undermining Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Nigeria, listed among the 37 countries with critical health workforce shortages by the WHO, faces a severe deficit of medical professionals, exacerbated by the migration of doctors and nurses to countries like the UK, USA, and Canada. The policy introduces measures such as bilateral agreements with key destination countries, the establishment of a digital registry for migrants, and improved incentives for health workers within Nigeria, including special credit facilities and career development opportunities.
Additionally, the policy mandates the creation of a robust migration management system, including data sharing and cross-border agreements to ensure ethical recruitment. The government will also review healthcare workers’ salaries and enhance security for those in conflict zones.
