Nigeria’s National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has reported a 3.2 million increase in the National Identity Number (NIN) to 107.338,044, marking a 3.2 million increase from the 104 million reported at the end of last year.
The commission is also working on introducing a general multipurpose NIN card for Nigerians to pay for. The Director General of the Commission, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, stated that the commission is revamping its systems, implementing cutting-edge technologies, and cracking down on fraudsters and extortionists.
The system’s capacity is expected to be upgraded to 250 million within six to eight months. The commission plans to review service prices to improve service delivery and prosecute staff members caught in illegal activities.
The new general multipurpose NIN card will allow Nigerians access to digital services and enhance financial inclusion. Applicants will need to request their NIN through a self-service online portal or banks, with NIN registration remaining free for citizens.
