The UN General Assembly’s President, Dennis Francis, has emphasized the need for sustainable and resilient tourism practices to protect the environment and benefit local economies.
Tourism, which contributed 3% to the global GDP in 2023, is susceptible to disruptive forces like climate change, pandemics, and domestic political instability.
Francis urged for a global tourism sector that is sustainable, with deep local value chains that expand demand for locally made products and services.
He also urged the sector to leverage digital technology to foster innovation and job opportunities, especially for women, youth, and indigenous communities.
Despite the challenges, tourism offers hope, with international arrivals rebounding to 90% of pre-pandemic levels in 2023.
