Jammu and Kashmir has re-emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing travel destinations.
Tourist numbers have risen sharply, and the region is preparing for the return of international flights through Srinagar.
According to official data from the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department, more than 36,000 foreign tourists and 1.77 crore domestic travelers visited the Union Territory during the latest tourism cycle.
The figures were presented in the Legislative Assembly in response to a question raised by MLA Hasnain Masoodi.
“This growth reflects renewed confidence among travelers and stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism potential,” a senior tourism department official said.
Kashmir Valley Leads Tourism Revival
The Kashmir Valley, with Srinagar as its main gateway, continues to drive the tourism surge.
Key destinations such as Dal Lake, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam, along with the surrounding Himalayan landscapes, remain among the most visited sites.
The region attracts leisure tourists, adventure travelers, and visitors interested in culture and heritage.
Tourism industry stakeholders say improvements in road connectivity, hotels, and security have supported the rise in visitor numbers.
“Tourists are returning not just for scenery, but for experiences such as heritage walks, winter sports, and local culture,” said Rajan Singh, a Srinagar-based tour operator.
International Operations
A major development supporting tourism growth is the readiness of Sheikh-ul-Alam International Airport, Srinagar, for international flights.
Officials confirm the airport is equipped with immigration, customs, and security infrastructure.
These facilities meet all technical requirements for handling international passengers.
Industry sources also say the airport is operationally prepared for overseas services.
Despite the airport’s readiness, the resumption of international flights will depend on commercial decisions by airlines.
Officials say airlines will assess passenger demand, route viability, and market conditions before launching services.
With record tourist arrivals, improved infrastructure, and an international airport ready for operations, Jammu and Kashmir is positioned for its next phase of tourism growth.
