Thousands of Asylum Seekers Flee Conflict to Nigeria

As of July 2024, over 23,465 foreign nationals, including 9,430 children, sought asylum in Nigeria, according to the UNHCR.

The majority, 15,908, are from Cameroon, while others hail from Syria, Sudan, and the Central African Republic, among other nations facing conflict.

The influx of asylum seekers is largely due to ongoing violence, such as the Ambazonian War in Cameroon, which has displaced over 700,000 people.

Most Cameroonian refugees are concentrated in Adamawa State.

Nigeria also hosts 5,629 urban refugees, mainly from neighboring countries like Niger and CAR.

As a signatory to the 1951 Geneva Convention, Nigeria offers refugee status and protection.

However, authorities remain vigilant against potential infiltrators amid the humanitarian crisis, with border control agencies on high alert.
