Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved the upgrade of Ibadan’s Alakia Domestic Airport to an international airport.
The ninth Senate has urged the Ministry of Aviation and other relevant authorities to proceed with the upgrade. The motion, sponsored by Senator Kola Balogun, emphasizes the necessity of modernizing the airport to attract economic development both locally and internationally.
Senator Balogun highlighted that an international airport would bolster the tourism sector, enhance communication links, attract foreign investments, and contribute to Nigeria’s gross domestic product (GDP).
Built in 1983, the airport has not undergone any significant upgrades since its establishment. Following unanimous approval, the Senate Committee on Aviation has been tasked to take further legislative steps. Former Senate President Joseph Wayas initially unveiled the airport in June 1982.
