The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has strongly opposed a proposed increase in levy charges by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).
NAMA plans to raise en-route navigational charges by 800%, from N2,000 and N6,000 to N18,000 and N54,000 per flight, to cover rising diesel and logistical costs.
AON’s spokesman, Obiora Okonkwo, argues that the increase could cripple the already struggling industry, highlighting a need for improved facilities and infrastructure instead. Aviation expert Captain John Ojikutu called the proposal “institutional corruption” and suggested that other agencies under the Ministry of Aviation should share the burden of the 5% fee collected by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
He also recommended that FAAN reassess landing fees to prevent further harm to airlines.
Airline operators have expressed frustration with multiple taxes imposed by the Federal Government, which they claim are inflating ticket prices.
The AON points out that over 20 taxes on each ticket, along with high foreign exchange rates, are exacerbating the issue.

In response, Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NCAA, rejected claims of excessive taxation.
He stated that the NCAA collects 5% of ticket fees but remits 50% to the Federal Government, Nimet, and NAMA.
