President Bola Tinubu has ordered the temporary suspension of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)’s cashless airport payment policy, just four days after its chaotic launch on March 1 triggered massive gridlock at airport gates across the country.
Hours before the President’s intervention, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo had posted on X promising a week-one review of the policy.
“By the end of this week, I, along with my team, will be reviewing the first one week of our going cashless at all our payment points at airports across the country in order to eliminate corruption and optimise revenue.”

But after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja, the Aviation Minister said, the policy will be suspended due to the challenges experienced at the Lagos and Abuja airports respectively.
The rollout on March 1 caused significant traffic congestion at airport toll gates as motorists who had not obtained their Go-Cashless cards arrived and were turned away, stranding hundreds and forcing some travellers to miss their flights on Day One.
