Hundreds of people gathered at the main airport in Russia’s Dagestan region to confront Jewish passengers on a flight from Israel.
The violence in the predominantly Muslim region, triggered by the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, prompted Israel to call on Russia to protect its citizens.
Over 150 “active participants in the unrest” were identified, with 60 arrested overnight. The incident occurred after a Telegram channel called for men to confront passengers of flight WZ 4728 by Red Wings, a Russian airline.
Dagestan, a Muslim-majority state in Russia, has struggled to subdue an Islamist insurgency.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for Russian authorities to protect all Israeli citizens and Jews. The airport was closed to incoming and outgoing flights, and security forces arrived on site.
