Sometimes, air travel can be stressful, especially when unexpected issues arise at the airport. A lot of Nigerians have faced several problems, which, at times, are due to misunderstandings or lack of awareness of airline policies.Ā

In this blog post, I’ll share two recent real-life events involving Nigerians and how to navigate such issues for a hassle-free airport experience.

Case 1: Visa & Layover Issues – What Went Wrong?

A Nigerian woman traveling from Lagos to Manchester via Paris was denied boarding on Kenya Airways because she lacked a Schengen visa for her layover in France. According to a report from ThisDayLive, the incident escalated when the distressed passenger demanded accommodation, which the airline does not provide for travelers with visa rejection at the airport.

It was reported that Kenya Airways offered an alternative flight, but the woman wasn’t pleased with the option. In a heated exchange at the check-in counter, she threw used sanitary pads at the airline staff, after being asked to present a proof that she was indeed having a blood clot as she claimed. The Kenya Airways found her behavior offensive, and condemned it as inappropriate behavior. The airline, in turn, faced criticism for its approach in handling the situation, with reports stating that some staff responded unprofessionally.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority intervened, and after discussions with Kenyan officials, it was agreed that she would be deported back to Nigeria.

A Nigerian influencer on X argued that airlines should treat Nigerian passengers with more dignity, emphasizing that certain limits should not be crossed.

Meanwhile, another X user defended Kenya Airways, stating that passengers must comply with airline rules and visa regulations to avoid such disputes.Ā

How should you handle a situation like this?

  • Always Confirm Visa Requirements: Incomplete travel documents can cause disruptions. Research both transit and final destination visa requirements before booking your flight.
  • Understand Airline Policies: Each airline has specific visa and layover policies. Check with the airline before booking to avoid unexpected travel complications.
  • Know Your Rights: As a traveler, know your rights. Feed yourself with accurate information to defend yourself when the need arises.
  • Seek Official Solutions: If an issue arises, stay calm. Speak to the airline representatives amicably and be open to convenient alternatives instead of confrontations.

Note: While passengers should follow the rules, airline staff must also handle disputes professionally and avoid actions that could worsen the situation.

Case 2: Excess Baggage Disputes – Lessons for Travelers

Another recent airport controversy, as reported by Arise News on What’s Trending,Ā  involved a Nigerian traveler who attempted to carry excess luggage in her hand luggage without paying the required baggage fees. When asked to pay, she refused and took to social media, accusing the airline of extortion and poor services.

How can you avoid this situation as a traveler?

If you find yourself in a similar situation in your journey as a traveler, below are some ways you can handle it.

  • Weigh Your Bags: Before heading to the airport, use a luggage scale at home to ensure your bags comply with airline baggage rules. This helps you budget accordingly and prevent unnecessary disputes.
  • Check Baggage Policies Online: Every airline has specific baggage limits and extra charges for excess luggage. Before you travel, visit the airline’s website to confirm their baggage fees and policies to avoid confusion.
  • Negotiate Professionally: If you are charged extra for overweight luggage, remain calm and explore reasonable solutions offered. Some airlines allow negotiations or repacking options, saving costs and preventing unnecessary confrontations.
