UK tuition fees for domestic students will rise by 3.1% to £9,535 in the next academic year, marking the first increase since 2017, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson announced on Monday.
Citing inflation as the reason behind the decision, Phillipson acknowledged the rise as difficult but necessary. Further reforms aimed at ensuring long-term investment in universities are expected in the coming months.
International students, who often pay more than twice the domestic fees, are a significant revenue source for UK universities, though it’s unclear if their fees will increase. UK universities are facing financial strain following reduced international student numbers, partly due to immigration policy changes.
