Ethiopia has banned diplomatic missions and international organizations from importing petrol and diesel vehicles, aligning with its clean energy goals.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this as part of efforts to reduce emissions and transition to renewable energy.
Diplomatic entities can only import electric vehicles under duty-free conditions. The policy, effective since January, builds on the country’s commitment to leveraging its renewable resources, including hydropower from the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
With about 100,000 electric vehicles in use, Ethiopia aims to quadruple this by 2032.
