32 years ago, I was an ardent but innocent listener who enjoyed listening to his favorite radio shows and DJ mixes. I tape-recorded radio shows so I could always play them back whenever I wanted to. Then, I didn’t know I was experimenting with what would later be known as ‘podcasts’. But I was not alone. Many people also recorded their favorite shows, like it was the sensible thing to do.

20 years later, I was a newsreader on national radio, hosting radio shows, and playing music for the world to have a good time. How fascinating it was to grow from audience to performer!

Every dream becomes a journey, every journey becomes an experience and each experience becomes a story. These stories become memories, and each memory becomes a reflective dream again. But this adventurous cycle is not as smooth as I have just described. Some dreams are aborted when faced with the harsh realities of life. An innocent yearning for adventure, a quest to go beyond current borders, to find new opportunities, or a hunger to reconnect with one’s roots.

An adage in my village states, ‘Be mindful of every journey no matter how transient!’ Indeed, behind every story of exploration lies a maze of misinformation, risks, and unexpected challenges. Some folks will succeed, others will fail. This is where Travel Radio steps in, to rewrite those stories with wisdom, clarity, and empowerment – for everyone who cares to listen!

Founded by the passionate and relentless Tope Samuel Akinsete, Travel Radio was born from a personal experience that was both devastating and transformative. I met Tope in the course of my journey into the field of professional broadcasting. Tope has always been a travel enthusiast, and I might even say, a wander-addict. He would dominate every conversation, talking about his dreams and plans to travel the world, and as his closest friend, I was the one who always had to hear him out. ✌🏽

Like most people trying to tour the world, Tope has had his fair share of troubles with unprofessional travel agents who only want to take his money. A budding traveler, swimming with the sharks of hungry tour operators, travel consultants, and immigration agents in an industry filled with false promises and fraudulent schemes. But rather than succumbing to despair, Tope allowed his losses to produce a positive mission in him —to be the travel industry’s voice of truth in a noisy world of misinformation. Thus, Travel Radio emerged as a go-to guide for everyone who dreams of traveling the world.

Millions fall prey to scammers while seeking guidance on traveling or relocating. They invest their life savings, only to end with shattered dreams and empty bank accounts. Beyond the talks, we actually do it!

My grandma was a trader before she passed. One memory I have is of her saying, ‘One who knows his limits is at par with the white man’. I did not understand how wrong she was until I began reading decolonized African histories. That was when I realized that no people are more down-stepped and devalued than the people of Africa. I can now say that even my grandma was deceived by the facade of the colonial regime.

Despite the rich heritage of Africa, many Africans in the diaspora find themselves lost—not just geographically but culturally. From the descendants of black slaves to the children of those who left seeking better opportunities, there is a growing disconnect from the Mother Continent, Alkebulan.

At Travel Radio, we see this disconnect as an opportunity to rekindle a sense of belonging and pride. This is why we delve into stories that celebrate the beauty, resilience, and relevance of African culture in today’s world.

Beyond storytelling, we collaborate with both major and minor black movements, advocating for the empowerment of Africans worldwide. Our shows and podcasts are not just broadcasts; they are urgent calls to action for Africans everywhere to reclaim their heritage, understand their value, and play an active role in shaping the future of their continent. This we believe is the beginning of a truly positive African revolution.

In ancient times, lepers were isolated for fear that if allowed to mingle, others would be in danger. More so, with COVID-19, we saw people quarantined away from their loved ones. Arguably, living with a third-tier passport can feel like one is living with a terminal disease. Low-rated passport holders are often subjected to discrimination. At Travel Radio, we recognize the challenges faced by these travelers, hence we offer specialized support through our “Black Helping Black Initiative” (BHBI, pronounced ‘bibi’).

BHBI is a travel support program that is based on Travel Radio’s relationship and networking to provide third-tier passport holders a chance to explore the planet without limits!

The BHBI’s mission is to empower those who have been marginalized by strained global systems, providing them with specific use-case knowledge and resources to navigate their journeys with confidence. This evidence-based information and consultancy is offered within the BHBI community where black people offer to assist fellow blacks. Through BHBI, we inform and educate third-tier passport holders to maximize their passports for work, career advancement, and economic development by fostering international relationships and sharing experience-based guidance.
