An American pilot, Lawrence Russell, has been jailed for 10 months after being caught over the legal alcohol limit before he was due to fly a passenger plane from Edinburgh to New York.
Russell was found with two bottles of Jägermeister in his carry-on luggage, one of which was half full. A breath test revealed that Russell was more than twice the legal alcohol limit for pilots.
The Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard Russell had not less than 49mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, exceeding the strict legal limit of 20mg. Russell was arrested and charged, and the flight to New York was cancelled.
Russell has two previous convictions for driving while under the influence of alcohol in the US. He is a recovering alcoholic and has completed the 12 Steps to Recovery rehab programme.
