The UK government has unveiled plans to modernize the nation’s outdated airspace to reduce emissions and improve efficiency.
The Department for Transport (DfT) announced a consultation to establish the UK Airspace Design Service, a body of aviation experts tasked with improving flight routes.
The overhaul aims to create quicker routes, reduce delays, and lower emissions by updating the current airspace system, which dates back to the 1950s.
London’s airspace, the UK’s busiest, will be reviewed first. Aviation minister Mike Kane emphasized that the modernization will provide a system “fit for the future.”

EasyJet highlighted that inefficient airspace management increases fuel consumption and emissions.
The consultation, which runs until December 17, seeks to address airspace inefficiencies to support sustainable air travel.
