The UK has approved legislation to detain migrants within days for deportation to Rwanda, sparking outrage from the United Nations and rights groups.

The legislation, aimed at curbing irregular cross-Channel migration from northern France, will send undocumented asylum seekers to Rwanda for examination and approval.

The UK’s Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, said deportations would begin within 10-12 weeks, with migrants identified for the first flight detained and held from as early as this week.

The legislation also gives decision-makers the power to disregard sections of international and domestic human rights law.

The UK’s plan has faced legal challenges and could still face legal challenges, with UN rights experts suggesting airlines and aviation regulators could fall foul of internationally protected human rights laws.
