The United Kingdom has committed an additional £7.5 million to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), bringing its total support since 2021 to £77 million.
This funding helps ATMIS protect key areas in Somalia, support joint operations with the Somali National Army, and facilitate humanitarian aid.
ATMIS also plays a crucial role in combating al-Shabaab and securing infrastructure and political processes, including elections.
The new funding will provide stipends for troops from Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda, and aid in the handover of security responsibilities to Somali forces.
UK Ambassador Mike Nithavrianakis emphasized the UK’s long-standing commitment to Somalia’s stability.
