A new 638-mile coastal highway from Lagos, Nigeria, to Abidjan, Ivory Coast, is set to enhance economic growth for Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, and Ivory Coast, benefiting over 40 million Nigerians.
With an estimated cost of $15.6 billion, the highway will feature a six-lane motorway and span three construction phases.
The African Development Bank (AfDB) exceeded its funding target for the project in 2022, facilitating progress.
Nigeria’s segment includes the expansion of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, adding 10 lanes, light rail, and a bus rapid transit system.
The project, which began in 2020, aims to achieve about 80% completion, offering a major boost to regional connectivity and supporting the African Union’s trans-African highway goals.
