Uganda has signed a $3 billion contract with Turkish firm Yapı Merkezi to construct the 273-kilometer Malaba-Kampala Railway, a major boost for the country’s transportation infrastructure.
Announced on October 14, this fully electrified railway will connect Uganda to Kenya, enhancing trade and regional connectivity.
The project, which includes two major stations and three freight terminals, is designed to carry 25 million tons of freight annually.
Yapı Merkezi Vice Chairperson Erdem Arıoğlu highlighted this as one of the largest international projects for a Turkish contractor.
Uganda’s Minister of Work and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, stressed the railway’s strategic importance in bolstering Uganda’s economy.

Set to link Kampala to Kenya’s Port of Mombasa, the railway is expected to reduce transport costs and improve access to the Indian Ocean, further integrating East Africa’s economies.
