Türkiye’s tourism sector kicked off 2026 with a significant rebound in international visitor numbers, reporting a 34.9 percent increase in tourist arrivals in January compared with the same month last year, according to data released by the Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry.
The ministry said preliminary figures show that 4.25 million foreign tourists visited Türkiye in January 2026, up sharply from 3.16 million in January 2025. Officials attributed the rise to expanded flight connectivity, eased entry rules for key markets, and renewed international confidence in Türkiye as a year-round travel destination.
Growth Driven by Europe, Middle East, and Asia Travelers
The government’s tourism office highlighted Europe as the largest source region for inbound visitors. German travelers topped the list, followed by arrivals from the United Kingdom, Russia, and France. The Middle East and Asia also contributed strongly, with notable increases recorded from Iran, Iraq, and South Korea.
Minister of Culture and Tourism Nuri Ersoy said:
“These figures show that we are continuing our recovery momentum, and the world is choosing Türkiye for its diverse tourism offerings.”
Ersoy added that Türkiye expects robust performance in key source markets throughout 2026, particularly as travel demand normalizes after pandemic-era disruptions.
He noted the government’s efforts to promote Türkiye’s “four seasons tourism” strategy, aimed at drawing visitors beyond peak summer months by showcasing cultural festivals, winter sports, and business travel opportunities.
Tourism Revenues and Airline Connectivity
Experts said the growth in visitor numbers is translating into economic gains beyond passenger counts. Preliminary data indicate that tourism revenues also rose, driven by hotel stays, excursions, and spending on local services.
Increased airline connectivity has been a major factor. Several international carriers expanded routes to major Turkish hubs like Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen Airport in early 2026, providing seamless connections from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
Local tourism operators told Daily Sabah that improved air capacity, combined with competitive pricing and promotional campaigns, played a key role in attracting visitors during the traditionally slower winter season.
Outlook for 2026
Industry analysts project that if the current trend continues, Türkiye is on track to exceed its pre-pandemic records for annual tourist arrivals.
The tourism ministry previously set a target of 80 million foreign visitors in 2026, an ambitious goal that now appears reachable.
Ersoy said the government will boost its marketing campaigns in North America and East Asia to sustain the growth, while also investing in digital experiences and sustainable tourism initiatives.
