Nigeria’s economic crisis has compelled Nigerian students at Teesside University in the UK to depart due to challenges in paying tuition fees.
The devaluation of the naira by over 34% has eroded the savings Nigerian students relied on. Teesside University adjusted its tuition fee payment schedule from seven installments to three, exacerbating financial strain.
Students encountering payment delays faced severe repercussions such as restricted access to university accounts, course withdrawal, and notifications to the Home Office.
Some even received communication from debt collectors. The Home Office revoked visas of affected students, citing withdrawal from studies at Teesside University. Students have suffered significant psychological distress, with reports of suicidal ideation and difficulties in basic self-care.
Teesside University asserts that their support efforts and tailored payment plans were inadequate or unheeded, emphasizing their inability to influence Home Office determinations.
