Lagos State in Nigeria has opened a second light-rail line to alleviate traffic congestion in the city’s commercial hub.
The 37-kilometer Red Line, built by China Civil Engineering Construction Corp., connects Agbado to Oyingbo and Victoria Island.
The facility is part of the state’s plan to improve transportation along waterways, roads, and rail. The Blue Line, a 13-kilometer rail service, reduced travel time from three hours to 25 minutes.
Lagos State, home to over 20 million residents, has the world’s worst traffic due to human congestion and poor road and transport infrastructure.
The government has signed an agreement with the Central Council for Economic Cooperation and Development (CCECE) to link the two services. More than 4.2 million residents have already purchased electronic cards for public transport.
