Angola is set to host a major international sporting event that could turbocharge its tourism sector, with the capital city, Luanda, confirmed as a venue for the UIM E1 World Championship in electric powerboat racing in September 2026.

The E1 Luanda Grand Prix 2026 is scheduled for September 12–13, 2026, marking Angola’s first time hosting a round of the world’s pioneering all‑electric powerboat series.

It also makes Angola the second African destination on the E1 calendar after Lagos in 2025.

This follows previous stops, including Monaco, Miami and Lake Como.

Tourism Vision

Hollywood star and Visit Angola Westbrook Racing team co‑owner Will Smith joined E1 founder and Chairman Alejandro Agag and Angola’s Minister of Tourism, Márcio de Jesus Lopes Daniel, to announce the event in Luanda.

Smith highlighted Africa’s drive and passion, describing the championship as more than just a race but “a movement” that will draw global attention.

Angola’s selection reflects its strong maritime heritage and strategic Atlantic coastal location. Organisers noted that Luanda’s setting matches the E1 Series’ emphasis on innovation, sustainability and water‑centric experiences.

Minister Daniel said the event aligns with Angola’s tourism goals and will showcase the nation’s potential on the world stage, promoting responsible tourism and long‑term destination growth.

Tourism Impact

The electric powerboat event is expected to generate significant international visibility for Angola.

The championship’s broadcasts will reach audiences in over 230 territories through major platforms such as DAZN and SuperSport, as well as E1’s digital channels, offering broad exposure that travel businesses and tourism promoters can leverage.

Celebrity involvement—including team owners from sport and entertainment circles such as LeBron James, Tom Brady, Rafael Nadal and Didier Drogba adds further media interest and global social engagement.

Inclusive Competition

The E1 World Championship features purpose‑built electric boats called RaceBirds and includes both male and female pilots, reflecting contemporary values of inclusivity and innovation.
