Rising domestic airfares in Nigeria are pricing many travelers out of air travel.
One-way economy tickets from Lagos to Abuja, Enugu, Owerri, and Kano have surged, with prices ranging between N130,000 and N650,000, depending on the airline and route.
This is a significant jump from last year when similar routes cost N50,000 to N75,000.
The reduction in operational aircraft due to costly maintenance and foreign exchange scarcity has exacerbated the issue. Dana Air’s grounding has further reduced available capacity, making some routes monopolized by airlines like Air Peace.
Passenger traffic has declined by 13% in 2023, with the Lagos airport seeing a 23% drop. Aviation stakeholders warn the situation may worsen as ticket prices continue to climb, making air travel inaccessible for many Nigerians.
