President Bola Tinubu has reinstated the Abuja metro system, declaring that all passenger services will be complimentary for the remainder of the year, effectively providing free transportation to the public from May 29th until December 31st.
President Tinubu revives Abuja metro service, suspended since 2020, and takes inaugural 40-minute ride, saying “Let’s give people reasons to celebrate!”
“The metro, launched in 2018, was soon derailed by Covid-19, leaving it vandalized, unused, and neglected,” President Tinubu said.
The revived Abuja metro, symbolizing unity and enhanced accessibility, now has all stations completed and access roads in place, with the government paying off its $30m debt to China Civil Engineering Construction Corp.
Chinedu Elechi, Transportation Secretary for the Federal Capital Territory, announced that the Abuja metro line will operate 12 trains, each capable of carrying at least 700 passengers, making 14 trips daily.
