Nigeria’s authorities have shut down a Chinese-owned supermarket in Abuja due to allegations that it denies entry to African shoppers.
The supermarket, a tenant in a building run by the China General Chamber of Commerce (CGCC), has been summoned by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).
The Chinese chamber of commerce in Nigeria has denied the racism allegations. The supermarket, which mainly sells Chinese groceries, has been a target of outrage on social media after Nigerians reported being turned away by security.
The CGCC has denied the allegations, stating that the supermarket’s principles are to enhance friendship between the people of both countries and promote economic development. The supermarket’s owner has not commented on the matter.
