Australia plans to decrease the number of migrants entering the country to curb the surge in post-pandemic migrants and tackle rising living costs.

 The centre-left Labour government has introduced measures such as tougher English-language requirements and higher wage thresholds to make it harder for everyone, including foreign students and low-skilled workers.

The government believes these reforms will bring the number closer to 250,000 in 2024 – 2025. Despite near-record employment rates, Australians are increasingly frustrated by soaring prices and an eye-watering real estate market.

 Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil emphasized immigration’s importance to Australia’s prosperity and vowed to build a better-planned system around essential things like housing.
