The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has reported that over 1,000 Nigerians have fallen victim to scams involving foreign job opportunities in the UK.
The agency advised Nigerians to seek proper information before embarking on migration. Some victims lost up to $10,000 each in their attempts to secure foreign jobs, leaving them stranded in the UK due to lack of means to return or shame of returning to their families.
The IOM is working with partners to repatriate thousands of people, including Nigerians, from Tunisia, which has recently placed a ban on migration. Displacements have increased by about 30% annually in the past five years, with Zamfara being the most impacted. In 2023, IOM identified and supported 682 victims of trafficking, focusing on vulnerable groups such as survivors of gender-based violence, persons with disabilities, and unaccompanied and separated children.

The agency also facilitated the return of 4,431 Nigerians and supported their reintegration, providing 2,853 individuals with socio-economic opportunities.
