London Heathrow has reclaimed Europe’s busiest airport crown after handling a record 84.5 million passengers in 2025 — surpassing Istanbul, Frankfurt, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Amsterdam Schiphol, and every other major hub on the continent.
Record-Breaking by Every Measure
Heathrow handled 84.463 million passengers in 2025 — a year-on-year increase of 0.7% — pushing its annual total above 84 million for the first time in its history.
The airport achieved its busiest December ever with nearly 7.2 million travellers, outperformed 2024 in nine of twelve months, and recorded its single busiest day on August 1 when over 270,000 passengers passed through its terminals.
Nearly 480,000 flights operated throughout the year, while more than 97% of passengers waited less than five minutes at security — making Heathrow Europe’s most punctual major hub.
The Markets Driving Growth
EU destinations led with 28.4 million passengers, up 1.1% year-on-year, followed by North America with 20.6 million. The strongest growth came from the Middle East at 2.8%, Asia-Pacific at 2.6%, and Africa at 2.1%.
What Comes Next
Heathrow has forecast passenger volumes exceeding 85 million in 2026, backed by a £1.3 billion investment programme focused on passenger experience and infrastructure resilience.
Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye summed it up confidently:
“Last year, there was no hub airport in Europe more punctual than Heathrow and we look forward to building on that success in 2026.”
