Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport introduces facial recognition technology for flight check-ins. The project aims to roll out biometric authentication AI at all security checkpoints by 2025.
Utilizing the databases of the UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security to automatically authenticate travelers, Etihad Airways has already implemented biometric systems that allow passengers to board flights without presenting their boarding passes.
The new technology is expected to reduce the time spent on ticket and travel document verification from 25 seconds to just 7 seconds. Abu Dhabi Airports claims the project will enhance airline performance, eliminate the need for infrastructure expansions, and detect fraud and forgery in identification documents.

The use of facial recognition technology is not limited to Abu Dhabi, as similar systems are being trialed in European airports, such as Milano Linate and Catania. The EU is also set to launch its Entry/Exit System, which will register travelers from the UK and non-EU countries using facial recognition and passport scanning.
