In a significant development affecting Nigeria’s travel sector, a senior immigration officer, Gbenga Akomolafe, and three others were arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for allegedly trafficking substantial quantities of Methamphetamine and Cannabis Sativa.
Akomolafe, who works at Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos, along with Babatunde Olufemi from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and two others, Nwadozie Amaechi and Nwosu Cyril, were on Monday brought before the Federal High Court in Lagos.
The defendants face nine charges related to conspiracy, unlawful possession, importation, and dealing in prohibited substances.
The NDLEA claims they are part of a drug syndicate attempting to smuggle the drugs out of the airport on May 21, 2024.
The prosecutor, Abu Ibrahim, detailed the charges, highlighting the severe implications for airport security and travel safety.
While the three co-defendants pleaded guilty and received sentences of four years on each count, with an option to pay fines, Akomolafe pleaded not guilty. His lawyer successfully argued for bail, set at N10 million with specific conditions.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges of drug trafficking within Nigeria’s travel hubs, raising concerns about security measures at international airports.
