The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) is addressing boat accidents in the northern region of Nigeria by constructing three open boats to reduce overloading and improve safety.
The agency is also working with governors and lawmakers to include boat construction in their constituency projects to reduce accidents, particularly in rural areas.
NIWA is also raising awareness about safety measures in boat travel, including promoting life jacket usage. The agency plans to engage with affected governors and lawmakers to include boat construction in their projects.

The spokesperson acknowledges that NIWA cannot tackle the issue alone and seeks support from local governments and communities to ensure safer water transport across Nigeria.
