The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has moved to clarify the recent US ban on Nigerian airlines, saying it’s not a safety concern but a technical issue that can be resolved.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has shed light on the recent US ban on Nigerian airlines, attributing it to a technicality rather than safety concerns. According to Acting Director General, Capt. Chris Najomo, the delisting from Category 1 status was due to Nigeria’s failure to have a domestic airline operate to the US within a two-year period.

“This requirement is part of the International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) program, which ensures that countries maintain a level of safety oversight that meets international standards,” Capt. Najomo explained. He emphasized that the delisting has no bearing on the safety or security of Nigerian aviation, stating, “Nigeria has consistently met and exceeded international safety and security standards.”

Despite the ban, Nigerian airlines can still operate to the US by wet-leasing aircraft from airlines in countries with Category 1 status.
