Marriott Bonvoy and Ethiopian Airlines have launched a new partnership aimed at transforming how African travellers earn and use travel rewards.
The agreement links Marriott Bonvoy’s global hotel network with Ethiopian Airlines’ ShebaMiles programme, allowing members to earn and redeem points across both flights and hotel stays.
Under the new arrangement, travellers can convert loyalty points between both programmes. ShebaMiles can be exchanged for hotel stays, while Marriott Bonvoy points can be used to book flights.
Members also have the flexibility to choose whether to earn airline miles or hotel points when staying at participating properties.
The partnership connects Ethiopian Airlines’ network of more than 145 destinations with Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of over 30 hotel brands across 10,000 locations worldwide.

Expanding Benefits for African Travellers
For frequent travellers, the deal creates a more seamless experience—one ecosystem covering both air travel and accommodation.
As part of the agreement:
- ShebaMiles can be converted to Marriott Bonvoy points at a 2:1 ratio
- Marriott Bonvoy points can be converted to ShebaMiles at a 3:1 ratio
- Members receive bonus miles on large point transfers
- Travellers can earn rewards across both platforms simultaneously
The integration also extends beyond Ethiopian Airlines, giving access to over 1,150 destinations through its Star Alliance network.
Strategic Push Into African Travel Growth
The partnership comes as Africa’s travel market continues to expand rapidly, with rising demand for both business and leisure travel.

Andrew Watson, Chief Commercial Officer for Europe, Middle East and Africa at Marriott International, said the move reflects that growth:
“Africa is one of the world’s fastest-growing regions for travel.”
On the airline side, Rahel Assefa, Vice President of Marketing at Ethiopian Airlines, said the partnership is designed to enhance customer value.
“Our ShebaMiles members will have greater opportunities to earn and redeem their miles,” she said, highlighting access to Marriott’s global hotel network.
A Broader Industry Shift
This move reflects a wider trend in the travel industry, where airlines and hotel groups are increasingly integrating loyalty programmes to retain customers and increase spending.
By combining flight and accommodation rewards, companies aim to create a more connected travel experience one that keeps customers within a single ecosystem.
For Africa, this kind of partnership also supports the continent’s push to improve travel infrastructure and customer experience.
The Bigger Picture
The Marriott Bonvoy-Ethiopian Airlines deal is more than a loyalty upgrade it’s a strategic play to capture Africa’s growing travel market.

For travellers, it means more flexibility, more value, and fewer limitations.
For the industry, it signals a shift toward integrated travel ecosystems where flights, hotels, and rewards all work together.
And in a competitive global market, that kind of alignment could be a game changer.
