Aviation experts have called on the Federal Government to halt the planned N24 billion refund to Nasarawa and Kebbi States for two unviable airport projects.

The experts argue that reimbursing the states could set a dangerous precedent, encouraging others to misuse federal funds.

They believe that proper viability assessments and planning should have been conducted before the airports’ construction.

Group Captain John Ojikutu questioned the rationale behind building airports without sustainability plans, accusing state governments of shifting responsibility to the Federal Government.

He also criticized the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority for approving the projects without ensuring long-term viability.

Other experts suggest that these airports should either be concessioned or closed to avoid further financial waste.

The request for refunds follows President Bola Tinubu’s May 2024 letter to the House of Representatives.
