The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is holding an Extraordinary Summit in Abuja to discuss the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the organization.
The Chairman of the Authority, H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasized the need for ECOWAS to reaffirm its commitment to peace, security, and regional integration.
He emphasized that democracy is merely a political framework and the path to addressing the basic needs and aspirations of the people.
Tinubu also urged the three states that decided to withdraw from ECOWAS to reconsider their decisions and not perceive the organization as an enemy.
He also urged the Heads of State to deliberate on the memorandum presented by the ECOWAS Commission President on peace and security in the region and the political situation in these countries.
A communique is expected at the end of the summit.
