On July 9, 2024, Uchenna Eziekwe, 28, and his wife Chineye were apprehended in Lagos for allegedly trying to sell their two-year-old child.
The arrest came following a tip-off received by the Divisional Police Officer of Isolo Police Station, who promptly intervened to rescue the toddler.
According to reports, Eziekwe, employed as a laborer, disclosed that the motive behind their actions stemmed from financial hardship exacerbated by the current economic climate.
The couple purportedly intended to sell their child to facilitate Eziekwe’s relocation to Canada in search of better job prospects.
In his statement, Eziekwe expressed the agonizing choice they faced, asserting it was driven by their dire financial circumstances and the belief that another caregiver could provide better care for their child.
He emphasized the difficulty of their decision, emphasizing the harsh economic realities they were confronting.
The authorities have detained the couple pending further investigation into the incident. The rescued toddler is currently under the care of child welfare services as the legal proceedings continue.
